On Saturday, Joon and I made a quick trip down the Avenue of the Stars, where I saw names and handprints of famous Chinese celebrities like Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Maggie Cheung (I have larger hands than her), and Tony Leung (of which I have a picture of me fainting by his star). I felt bad for Wong Kar Wai, whose star was completely ignored by the multitude of tourists lining up to take a picture with a statue of Bruce Lee.
The main event for the day was a road* trip to Lantau Island, home to the Tian Tan Buddha. We took a ferry and then a bus and finally got to the top of the mountain, where the giant Buddha statue was waiting. Below the Buddha was a beautiful temple. When I entered I immediately felt a sense of humility even if it wasn’t my religion/belief.
Nearby was Ngong Ping village, recreated to look like an old Chinese town (Joon exclaimed, “Seven Samurai!” when he saw it), though if you look closer, the thatched roofs contained a Starbucks and a 7-11.
After taking another long bus and train ride, we hung out at Joon’s friend Cheryl’s flat before heading home.
*Is it still considered a road trip if you traveled part of it by sea?
