Donating to Manila from abroad (2009 Typhoon Ondoy)

11/10/2013: Some people are finding this post recently because of Typhoon Haiyan. This post was meant for Typhoon Ondoy in 2009. If you would like to donate to the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan, please go here instead. Thank you.

News:

  • Spain: There will be a fundraising concert in Barcelona for the typhoon victims, at Razzmatazz on November 18. Details to follow.
  • TipidTalk.com is donating all its September – October phonecard profits to Typhoon Ondoy. If you want to call Manila, do it through them.
  • I know that this blog post is being linked around the world for foreign aid, but just in case you guys have contacts in Manila, please URGE them to help with the clean-up efforts. Pasig, Cainta, and Marikina in particular have been hit very hard, and the faster we clean up the mud, the better for everyone’s health in those areas. Thanks.
  • A million thanks to every single person who has forwarded me info. Many of them are in the Comments below, or on Facebook. This list is being updated constantly – please keep ‘em coming.

I’m not one for feeling helpless – and neither are the rest of the Filipinos around the world. When Typhoon Ondoy struck Manila this weekend and buried 80% of it underwater, everyone went online on Facebook and Twitter and started what my dad calls People Power 3.

If you’re outside the Philippines like me, and you want to help, here’s what you can do:

Donate Online

Donate by Phone

  • USA: Call the American Red Cross at 1-800-435-7669. Please choose the 3rd option (International Donation), then tell the operator that your donation is for the Ondoy (Ketsana) typhoon victims in the Philippines.

Donate Through Your Community

There might be people in your community gathering relief goods and donations. Find them and go.

Hi my name is Lorraine from Brisbane Australia. I have begun a clothing drive, which only started out as an email to some girlfriends, but has gone massive – the major newspaper and radio stations are even getting involved!!! i will have boxes and boxes and boxes of clothing wihtin a couple of week. My problem…..I am having trouble contacting the RED CROSS in the Philippines. It looks like i will be able to organise free postage, but i just need someone in the Philippines to accept the goods and to hand them out to the people who need it most! If it’s not the Red Cross, i am happy for Church groups etc to accept them, as long as it gets to the right people.

I hope you can help me!!!

      Lorraine

    great job moongirl!!!

guys, Ms. Tina Monzon Palma of ABS-CBN said that if we’re planning to help, it would be better if we do it in cash… coz they will need to pay Customs to get the donations in kind… Pres. Arroyo should do something about that asap… all donations that pass thru Customs still need to be paid…?

  13. It is really sad that the poverty stricken population in 3rd world countries get hit the hardest.

But lets be honest, this wasnt just a freak accident… I think the corruption in the Philippines is another contributing factor. If there was no corruption or if corruption occured at a smaller scale, there would be more money to fix the sewage systems and implement barriers to prevent these tragedies.

  14. Anononymous-kun says:

Hello. Can we please get a confirmation if PhilippineAid.com is legit? By the way, the Kapuso Foundation, ABS-CBN Foundation, Gawad Kalinga, and the Philippine National Red Cross all now have online donation set up on their respective websites.

    • thanks for being such a sweet blessing, Moongirl :)

  17. Hi Luna, This is Auey, sister of Reitch. Just wanted you to know. Thanks so much for this compilation of info! Here’s something you might want to add for Bay Area CA Filipinos.

MANILA BOX USA is now accepting donations in kind and will provide free shipping to Manila. Items will be sent by Sea Cargo and will delivered to the Whitespace Relief Center/Mar Roxas Headquarters in Cubao. 18. Thank you so much for this list!

For those who are wondering what they need most in the Philippines, here is a list of most urgent needs according to the Philippine National Red Cross:

    Most urgent needs

Food items: Rice, noodles, canned goods, sugar, iodized salt, cooking oil, monggo beans and portable water

Medicines: Paracetamol, antibiotics, analgesic, oral rehydration salts, multivitamins and medications to treat diarrheal diseases

Non-food items: Bath soaps, face towels, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, plastic mats, blankets, mosquito nets, jerry cans, water containers, water purification tablets, plastic sheetings, and Laundry soap

Rehabilitation Programs: Shelter materials for house repair

  19. moongirl says:

    Ronna: Thanks for the correction!

Maja: If you’d like to send cash, you can do it online through numerous sites (listed above).

  20. Oh, I also have another question. I’m trying to get the word out on how a little can go a long way with donations.

How much would a cup of rice and a bottle of water cost in the Philippines? With the current exchange rate of 1USD=47PHP, how far can US$5(PHP235) go? It helps to put things into perspective so people know that just a little bit can go a long way.

    • as far as i remember, (like a few months ago)

      1kilo rice = Php40-50
      1 bottle of water 8oz = Php10-15
      5gallon distilled water = Php30-35

So that’s like a $1-1.50 and it WILL go a long way.

but i heard now that stores and groceries are overpricing :( DTI is trying to put a stop on that, but im not sure how that is turning out now.

Money is a good thing to donate, but if you have goods too, let’s send it off! At a time like this, where people are shocked out of their wits, lack of food and basic necessities is the last thing they should be worrying about.

  21. im wondering why no one has started any help from san diego california.my sisters and i are send relief goods this week. anyone from san diego whose willing to donate let us know. please reply to this comment.thanks

I live in Cypress (close to Cerritos) and I’m planning to spread the word and put up boxes in my school for donations. I was wondering, is there’s a particular day you’ll be sending out boxes to Manila from your place in Cerritos?

Would you happen to know if there are donation sites here in Japan? We are already soliciting help from our members and would like to coordinate with NGO’s to help us transport collected goods to the Philippines. Thank you much.

Its good to know that Oxfam and the Red Cross are helping the Philippines, but what about the Royals and the British Government, where is their offer of help. The government have sent a team to Indonesia but what about the Philippines.

‘Ketsana’ (Ondoy) is WORSE than Hurricane Katrina and the government or Royals are not doing anything. Then ‘Parma’ (Pepeng) is now upon the Philippines less than a week later and still no help from British Government or Royals.

    Is this fair???

How many people have to die or be displaced before the Uk Officials will do anything to help

  47. Greetings from UNICEF USA!
Thank you for all of your efforts to raise funds for the children and families affected by the flooding in the Philippines. Your site is one of our top referrers and I wante to reach out with some information/updates:

An estimated 2.5 million people have been affected by Typhoon Ketsana already. In an effort to ward off disease among the displaced, UNICEF is distributing:

    *family kits containing cooking pots, blankets, water buckets, sleeping mats and soap;
    *hygiene kits containing soap, toothpaste, slippers and towels;
*emergency health kits with drugs and equipment and water purification supplies.

Children’s psychosocial health is also an issue in the aftermath of a disaster like this, and UNICEF is working to establish safe, child-friendly spaces within the evacuation centers for play and educational activities.

UNICEF is also prepositioning people and supplies to prepare for the coming typhoon Pepeng/Parma. Staff are on standby in North Luzon, and family kits are ready to be distributed to those displaced. By current forecasts Manila is also set to receive heavy rains, further endangering those families whose homes were underwater only a week ago.

Our match of up to $500,000 is still on through October 6th, and can be accessed at http://www.unicefusa.org/donate/Philippines.

Apologies to anyone who had trouble making a donation. The US postal address fields are often different from those in other parts of the world, and is usually what causes credit cards to be rejected. Please try again as we accept all donations via Amex, Mastercard, Visa and Discover.

If you’re in the US and would like to join us, please become a fan of UNICEF USA on Facebook (www.facebook.com/unicefusa), or follow us on Twitter (www.twitter.com/unicefusa).

    Best wishes,
    Andrea

    Hi MoonGirl,

I think you should block individuals posting paypal accounts and bank accounts for donations to your Comments section here. There are scammers taking advantage of people.

Readers please make donations to well known institutions such as Philippine red cross, Abs cbn Foundation, and to sites you are familiar with.

    Don’t give money to scammers.

See here for a news article about this

  51. Very good job. What you did is very commendable. Keep it up.

The Philippines is still in need of more donations for the victims of the 2 recent typhoons which hit the country the past 2 weekends.

An American Entrepreneur already offered help by giving away $50 each to chosen people in the Philippines who are personally extending help to their own relatives, family members, friends, neighbors, and even strangers who are greatly affected by the strong storms. He even created a site that gave way for soliciting help around the globe. He has started the movement. Let us offer help in any way we can.

No amount is too little when it comes from the heart.

    Please visit:
http://nanoaid.org/papertiger/ for information on how you can help.

    Hi Moongirl and all kababayan!

On the 18th of November we will have a fundraising concert for the Filipino victims (I will send the e-flyer next week).

This will be held in Barcelona, Spain in a concert place named Razzmatazz.

All musicians, personnel, graphic designer, etc… are collaborating free of charge so the less we have to spend the more we will donate. Please spread the word to all the people who will be in town this day.

    BTW: Great Job!

    tulong tulong

  58. anonymous says:

Please be careful of who you endorse. Example, Erliza Apero of Balikbayan Europe has victimized many kababayans in the Netherlands! Many customers have not received their balikbayan boxes, and as I’ve gathered there are donation boxes from NGOs for typhoon victims until now (April 2010!) that are stuck in their warehouse somewhere in the Netherlands! The Philippine Embassy in the Netherlands are aware of this but can’t do anything of the situation because Erliza and her partners are not responding to any emails/calls!

  59. martin says:

    Hi!

I am going back to the Philippines in my hometown in Basey, Samar , My family is the big sponsor of a town fiesta there on September 29th this year. We had been residing in the US/California for almost 20 years. I have a tremondous contacts here and I am planning a charity event to fundraise or encourage people to donate clothes, books, supplies, maybe do a medical mission or anything that I can bring for the poor people there. My families goal is to really make a difference for the people especially the children where we were in the same situation when we used to live there back when we were kids.

How to do I go about it? I have’nt done this before?

How do I get FREE SHIPPING to the Philippines?

Please HELP me so I can plan for everything.

    Martin

    • moongirl says:

      Hi Martin,

I’ve actually never organized a charity event myself; I merely compiled news during the 2008 typhoon. What I would recommend is to partner with a charity or non-profit organization in Manila. They would be able to use their connections (including shipping) to get your donations to Samar. It would be good publicity for them, too.

  60. Hey, Just a heads up that when I arrive at the homepage I keep getting send straight to this comment page, I’m not sure why but thought you would like to know Especially on the homepage) Best wishes
